A small daily cream ritual for the skin around a fingernail
A minute for your hands. A moment for you.

A bitter reminder. A softer landing.

Bitter Barrier brings a moment of awareness and everyday skin care together, in one little tube.

LIFE HAPPENS. HABITS HAPPEN.

Different days. A familiar feeling.

Maybe it is your workday. Your evenings. Or someone you love. There is room for your story here.

A woman pausing at her desk beside a notebook and laptop

MAYA · THE DEADLINE DESK

When your mind is busy.

One more email. One more tab. And a hand that moves before you notice.

Read the moment

Maya is halfway through a busy afternoon when she notices her fingers near her mouth again. Her first thought is familiar: Why am I still doing this?

A kinder first step is smaller than a promise to stop forever: notice the moment, rest her hands on the desk, and take a short pause.

Your first step: notice one recurring moment today. No judging. 💚

A man taking an evening pause on an olive sofa with his phone set down

SAM · THE EVENING SCROLL

Even when the day is over.

The sofa feels quiet. Your hands seem to have plans of their own.

Read the moment

Sam settles in for a few minutes on his phone. A few minutes becomes an hour, and the familiar movement slips in without an invitation.

He does not need to turn a quiet evening into another test of willpower. Putting the phone down for a moment can be a place to begin noticing what his hands are doing.

Your first step: choose one calm pause in your evening. 🌙

An adult daughter and her father having a warm conversation at a kitchen table

NORA & HER DAD · ON THE SAME SIDE

Support can sound softer.

You want to help someone you love. They want to feel understood.

Read the moment

Nora is an adult, but her dad still notices the small things. Another reminder to stop can make an ordinary conversation feel uncomfortable for them both.

A different opening leaves room for her choice: Would you like support, or would you rather I just listen? A gentle conversation can come before any product.

Your first step: ask what kind of support they want. 🤍

THE SCIENCE OF A SMALL PAUSE

The habit has a pattern. So can your next step.

There is research behind practising a different response to an automatic behaviour. Here is one study worth understanding — and where our everyday care fits.

SMALL MOMENTS, SEEN DIFFERENTLY
  1. 01

    Notice the moment.

A screen. A deadline. An idle minute. Start by noticing what is happening around the habit.

  2. 02

    Make room for a pause.

Let noticing be useful information, rather than another reason to be hard on yourself.

  3. 03

    Choose a gentle next step.

Rest your hands, take a short break, or explore the self-help approach in the study.

Everyday reflection prompts. The research below tested its own specific technique.

RESEARCH NOTE / 001

JAMA Dermatology 2023

A different response is worth exploring.

268adults randomized
6weeks of intervention
2study groups

A randomized study found that a self-help habit-replacement technique reduced self-reported body-focused repetitive behaviours more than a wait-list comparison.

The study tested a self-help technique. It did not test Krelune cream.

What the study can — and cannot — tell us

Participants were recruited online and reported behaviours including skin picking, hair pulling and nail biting. Each group had 134 participants.

Diagnoses were not independently verified; outcomes were self-reported and there was no longer-term follow-up. These findings do not establish a cure, a result for every person, or an effect of Krelune.

FOR PARENTS. WITH LOVE.

Small hands. Big feelings.

You see the habit. They feel the attention. A softer kind of support starts by being on the same side.

A mother and daughter drawing together at their kitchen table

A moment with mum.

A little less correcting. A little more being together. Start with a conversation, not a promise to be perfect. 💚

A father listening to his son on a garden bench

Dad, on your side.

Sometimes the most useful thing to say is: “I am here if you want help.” Let your child have a voice in what comes next.

A child showing both open hands with a small smile

More than a habit.

Hands are for drawing, waving and telling big stories. Make room for the whole child, not just the thing you want to change. ✨

For children, begin with support and the guide. Check the product’s age guidance and ask a qualified professional about suitability before using any product.

“I appreciate that the brand is honest. It's bitter, and it interrupts you. It's not magic, but it gives you the awareness you need to stop in the idle moments. Works way better than the lacquers.”

“Finally a product made for the skin around the nails, not the nail itself. The horrible bitter lacquers belong in the trash. This soothes the damage and the taste stops me. Simple.”

“I don’t even bite my nails, I chew the skin around them until they bleed. Every polish I bought on Amazon was useless because it's for the nail. This cream goes exactly where my damage is. No stinging, either.”

“Tried a bitter polish before and it became my entire existence. Every time I ate a sandwich, I tasted chemicals. This cream stays exactly in the skin folds. Deducted one star just because you really have to remember to reapply after washing hands.”

“When your cuticles are already torn and bleeding, applying alcohol-based lacquer is pure torture. I’m so glad I found this. The cream base doesn't sting at all on my broken skin.”

“The problem with clear nail varnishes is they leave a film, which just gave me something new to pick at. This cream absorbs completely. There's nothing to peel. Really clever approach.”

“I usually don't even notice I'm picking until I see blood. It happens when I'm driving or scrolling. The bitter taste of this cream is a literal wake-up call that interrupts the trance.”

“My picking always starts with feeling one rough edge of skin. The cream keeps the skin soft so there's no rough edge to trigger the habit. It takes a few days to get used to the taste, but it definitely works.”

“I’ve chewed my fingers since I was 7. The Amazon stuff just tasted bad but didn't stop me. This cream gives me that half-second to realize what I'm actually doing. First time I have hope.”

“Other anti-bite products leave a gross residue on everything I touch. Because I can rub this cream right into the cuticle, I don't get transfer on my laptop keyboard. Absolute game changer.”

“I hated bitter polishes because they chip after a day, and then you have to strip it to start over. With this, I just reapply. Giving it 4 stars because the bitterness really caught me off guard at first!”

A LITTLE CLARITY

Good questions. Clear answers.

Answered by a human, usually the same day

Does it actually taste bitter?
Yes. That is the mechanism: you notice before you bite. A signal, not a punishment.
Will anyone see it?
No. It dries clear. No polish, no shine.
Is this a treatment?
No. Cosmetic care, not a cure for onychophagia or any condition.
How long does a tube last?
About a month. Reapply after washing your hands.
My skin is already sore. Can I use it?
Not on broken skin. Wait until it closes. If it stings, stop and ask a pharmacist.
What if it does not work?
One message within 30 days and you get your money back. You do not have to send anything back, and an opened tube still counts.

ONE SMALL START. TODAY. ✨

You do not need a perfect Monday. Just a little care, within reach.
